Three Minutes to Stress Relief: A Deep
Breathing
Exercise
This is an exercise that many people utilize to bring
about
stress relief in the "heat of the moment" - think
traffic jams, temper tantrums, work deadlines, etc.
Simple techniques, like this controlled breathing
exercise, can help whenever you feel your stress
levels
soaring.
This exercise can be done for as little as three to five
minutes at a time and is an effective way to halt
escalating feelings of anger, tension, and
frustration.
- Sit upright in a comfortable position.
- Close your eyes.
- Focus on your present state and existence (this is
often termed being "mindful").
- Block out intrusive thoughts.
- Pay attention to your breathing.
- Inhale slowly through the nose, taking several
seconds.
- Exhale through the mouth, trying to make the
exhalation phase last twice as long as the inhalation.
- Continue this mindful breathing for 3-5
minutes.
You can practice this exercise in stressful moments
or you can increase the practice to 15-20 minutes per
day as a form of meditation. With regular practice, you
can train your body to relax in stressful situations
using this exercise. Taking a restorative pause to
focus on your breathing can be a valuable stress
management tool.

| Healthy Highlights: Cabbage |
 |
Cabbage is a versatile vegetable; it is a good
source of vitamin C and is rich in indoles. Studies
suggest that the phytochemicals of indoles may help
prevent breast cancer.
Confetti Slaw with Spicy Peanut
Dressing
1 pound green cabbage (about half a medium head),
finely shredded
1 large carrot peeled and grated
1 tsp. salt, plus more to taste
2 TBSP butter smooth peanut butter
2 TBSP peanut oil
2 TBSP rice-wine vinegar
1 TBSP Tamari or soy sauce
1 tsp. honey
2 medium garlic cloves coursely chopped
1 1/2 inches fresh ginger
1/2 jalapeno, seeded
4 medium radishes, halved lengthwise and thinly
sliced
4 medium scallions thinly sliced
Toss cabbage and carrot with 1 tsp. salt in a colander
set over a medium bowl. Let stand until cabbage
wilts, 1 to 4 hours. Rinse cabbage under cold running
water. Press, but do not squeeze, to drain; pat dry with
paper towels. Cabbage can be stored in a resealable
plastic bag and refrigerated overnight, if
desired.
In the bowl of a food processor, make dressing by
pureeing peanut butter, oil, vinegar, soy sauce, honey,
garlic, ginger, and jalapeno together until a smooth
paste is formed. Toss cabbage, carrot, radishes,
scallions, and dressing together in a medium bowl.
Season to taste with salt. Cover and refrigerate until
ready to serve.

Tami Nobles
You can find Tami cruising around the halls of Sana
Vida going to acupuncture or many of our yoga
classes including Beginner's Yoga, Hatha 2/3, or
Vinyasa 1/2. She always brings her cowgirl flare to
class!
When asked how yoga has affected her lfe, Tami
said "I find yoga helps in many ways. It improves my
balance, strength, coordination, and stress levels. I
am grateful for the teachers at Sana Vida for taking
this challenge on with me. What a journey! Here's to
Mom, you inspire me! (Gina's 80 yr old mom)
Namaste"
Ask Patti
How do I tell my friends about acupuncture? I'm
not sure how best to explain it.
Many people still don't understand how an imbalance
of qi ("chee")
can bring on many health problems. Even worse, they
don't know that acupuncture is often the very treatment
they need. Worse still, it may be a long time before
they discover acupuncture unless someone tells them
about it.
That is why it is so important that people who have
personally experienced the benefits of acupuncture
tell their friends their own acupuncture story. There's
no need to get technical; just keep it simple and
speak from your heart. Many fear the experience will
be painful. Most importantly, impress upon your friend
that no matter how intense their so called "fear of
needles" is, they deserve to give acupucnture a shot.
(No pun intended.)
Explain to your friend how your health used to be
before you tried acupuncture. Then, tell your friend
what acupuncture has done for you. Finally, have your
friend give us a call to see if we might be able to help
him/her too.
