    Creating Powerful, Life-long Goals

"Goals rooted in what really matters are far easier to keep than facile resolutions that roll off the surface, right down the drain."
    -Joan Borysenko

Goal setting is a powerful process for personal planning. By setting goals on a routine basis you decide what you want to achieve, and then move step-by-step towards achieving these goals. With that in mind, wouldn't you prefer to set goals that will matter for the rest of your life as opposed to goals that you'll forget by next month?

The process of setting goals and targets allows you to choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, and what matters most to you, you know what you have to concentrate on to do it. You also know what is merely a distraction. One way to decide which goals are worth working towards is to imagine yourself later in life, on your way out, if you will, looking back on your past. Have you accomplished your heart's deepest desires or have you been running in someone else's race?

So how do you tune in to what's most meaningful to you personally? Ask yourself the following questions: What matters most to you? What did you learn in your life? How do you want to be remembered? Are there things you wish you'd done but never got around to doing? Jot down your thoughts in a journal for future reference and possible expansion of the ideas. Take a deep look at family, friends, faith, finances, fitness, and work and come up with long- term ideals for these areas. Once you know your life's intentions, it'll be much easier to set goals that will help you achieve your bigger dreams.

For instance, you may long to find a job that feeds your soul, rather than your ego or pocketbook. As you go out searching for your next job, your intentions will help guide your choices. You may be offered a position with a non-profit and one with a global organization. Although the large salary offered with the global company is nice, you sense a spark of passion and excitement within you when you think of the greater good that will be helped with the non-profit. You can then set goals for your finances that will make living on the tighter budget easier and more worthwhile.

Looking back and realizing that you lived a life of purpose will be a blessing for you, those you love and those your life impacted for years to come.

"The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable."
    -Denis Watley

Once you've spent some time thinking about the objectives for your ideal life, you'll need to spend some time laying out the goals that will help you get there. Goal setting techniques are used by top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all fields. They give you long-term vision and short- term motivation. They focus your acquisition of knowledge and help you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the very most of your life.

By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. By setting goals, you will also raise your self-confidence, as you recognize your ability and competence in achieving the goals that you have set.

Starting with your smaller target goals first, use the following formula to set clear, concise and attainable goals.

    • Specific -Your goal must be specific
    • Measurable - You must be able to measure progress
    • Attainable - Your goal must be something that you can achieve
    • Realistic - Your goal must be realistic, given who you are
    • Time Bound - Your goal must have measurable deadlines
Finally, once you have your plan, start working towards achieving it and the deepest desires of your heart.

The Miracle Medicinal Powers of Garlic

    Did You Know...?

Used medicinally since ancient times, garlic is now being studied by scientists. Studies have shown garlic to fight cancer and heart disease.

Garlic also contains sulfur compounds that speed the breakdown of carcinogens (cancer-causing substances.)

A study in China's Shandong province showed that the more garlic people ate, the less likely they were to develop stomach cancer.

And if that is not enough, garlic has also been shown to lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol, and to inhibit clotting.

According to the Red Cross, blood is traditionally in short supply during winter months. Holidays, bad weather, vacation travel and illness often prevent people from donating blood during this season. A shortage of blood can mean - literally - lives lost, as thousands of units of blood are needed every day of the year in hospitals nationwide. If you are interested in donating blood this month, visit www.redcross.org for more information on donor requirements. Help celebrate life, and consider giving blood.

Patti Answers Your Questions About Acupuncture

    "Qi? What is it?
    What does it do?"

One English translation of the word Qi means energy, and though Qi is invisible, its presence becomes especially apparent in the working of the bodily organs and systems which require prodigious amounts of energy. Yet the Chinese view Qi not only as powering a function, they see it as inseparable from function as though there's no Qi without function and no function
    without Qi.

Qi is also known as the life force, and since the total absence of Qi is death, obviously one's good health depends on a balanced distribution of Qi throughout the meridian network that influences the organs as well as the bodily systems: skeletal, muscular, endocrine (glands), circulatory, digestive, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, and nervous. When Qi flows smoothly and harmoniously throughout the meridians, each bodily system and organ interacts with and affects all the other systems and organs, which in turn are interdependent, interrelated, and integrated. Everything works together to make us feel whole and healthy,
    thanks to Qi.
