WHY TEA FOR BETTER HEALTH?

More than a decade's worth of research about green tea's health benefits, particularly its potential to fight cancer and heart disease, has been more than intriguing, as have studies about green tea's role in lowering cholesterol, burning fat, preventing diabetes and stroke, and staving off dementia.

GREEN TEA VS. OBESITY

Get Younger by the Cup
Drinking oolong tea takes 2 years off the internal organs' age. Using various indicators, such as cholesterol level, blood sugar level and liver activity, the researchers were able to calculate the age of the internal organs.

Block Fat Absorption
Oolong tea leaves contain saponins, waxy substances that may block the absorption of dietary fat. It’s concluded that oolong tea can increase lipid excretion into feces when taken together with high fat food.

Reduce Fat Storage
Green tea prevents fat from being stored, can increase protein levels, and promote thermogenesis by triggering beta- adrenoceptor. Green tea can directly inhibit gastric and pancreatic lipases. These enzymes are the primary cause of fat storage and by delaying their actions, green tea slows this storage.

GREEN TEA VS. CANCER

Powerful Antioxidants
One of the most powerful in nature, green tea antioxidants have been found to be over 100 times more effective in neutralizing free radicals than vitamin C, and 25 times more powerful than vitamin E. The most important antioxidant is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). Studies have found that it reduces cellular damage that could lead to cancer.

Few Side Effects
Unlike drugs such as Methotrexate, studies suggest that EGCG destroys cancer cells without harming surrounding healthy cells. Study carried out jointly by the University of Murcia in Spain and John Innes Centre in England discovered why this enzyme is also targeted by methotrexate, an anti-cancer drug long used for treating cancerous breast, head and neck, and lung tumors. But methotrexate is known to cause vomiting and hair loss, among other ills. "We discovered that EGCG can kill cancer cells in the same way as methotrexate. However, because EGCG binds to the target enzyme less tightly than methotrexate, it should have decreased side effects on healthy cells."

Starve Cancer Cells
To reproduce quickly, cancer cells need many blood vessels to supply them with nutrients. Green tea blocks angiogenesis, or the development of new blood vessels, thus starving off these cancer cells from nutrients.

Kill Cancer Cells
Green tea turns off the growth genes and turns on the suicide genes in cancer cells. It works as a free radical just inside cancer cells, causing so much damage that the cancer cells commit suicide.

Block Cancer-Causing Enzyme
Overproduction of enzyme cyclooxygenase, COX-2 has been implicated as a factor in many diseases, including arthritis and cancer. Green tea inhibits the overproduction of COX-2. Green tea also blocks enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), which has been found to be a catalyst to cancer growth.
